'X' Marks the Spot

The easiest way to help someone is to lend a helping hand.. but the world is growing selfish, with people that are too wrapped up in their problems to look around at the bigger picture.

Humanity is the target, and slowly, one by one, we are destroying ourselves...

Is Thrash Metal Back?

-------

My friend decided to take over my dA for a while, and write about thrash metal..

-------

Endgame is the upcoming twelfth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth, set to be released on Roadrunner Records on September 15, 2009. It will be the first album featuring guitarist Chris Broderick, following Glen Drover's departure in 2008.

After listening to the record over about ten times now, I realize how this could be the return of the great 80's thrash sound that the big four had once a mighty hand over. Even though today while Anthrax comes out of hibernation and Metallica grow old and annoying, I guess the only band you can count on to bring thrash back from the early roots is Megadeth or Slayer. I particularly believe that 'Endgame' is one of those revolutionary metal records that bring back a genre from the dead.

I decided to review three songs off the new album, just to give an idea to all you metalheads out there about this beautiful record:

1. 1,320 – Ripping of race cars + Megadeth = Win. Sounding like something that could be from “So Far So Good... So What” the opening riff sounds very steady and aggressive, it then changes course to something that is from “The World Needs a Hero” with a steady slower riff and then back into gear to a shredfest of brutality. So to recap: it was thrash, to nu-metal, back to thrash. Decent song and once again stellar solos of jazz and pure shred.

2.Headcrusher – This being the single, it was released a while ago now and for the most part is a good song. It opens with a solo that punches you in the face if you are first hearing it. Well, the intro still has the same effect now. The song sounds very “United Abominations” and I think Mustaine was looking for a song that could be interactive with the audience in their live performances. My favourite part is at the two minute mark of the song and on, simple but heavy riff with complicated solos make for a very effective conclusion.

3. The Right to go Insane – First off, the bass intro was much needed and really works for the final song on the record. The main riff is the bass intro but it’s...so....heavy. Altogether the song is a strong finish. It is not like “Victory” on Youthanasia and takes you by surprise but I am happy that the song was as strong as it was, most bands lately put all their amazing songs at first and leaves the crap in the back but not Megadeth. A while back, when people were looking for the songs on youtube, most everyone posted a riff that lasted around 42 seconds, it is this riff that ends the song with an amazing solo and conclusion into Megadeth’s best record since Rust in Peace.

If you are reading this, listen to this record... for it is you who has THE RIGHT TO GO INSANE!
